JAG is an acronym for Judge Advocate General and is a wing attached to the United States Defense Department. When it was first aired in 1995 on NBC, it did not have much response from television viewers. It was not popular and could not gather good ratings. In fact it was ranked only 77th, which prompted NBC from stopping the show on its channel. It was out of television for sometime until rival CBS decided to air it.

CBS had no reason to regret the decision to telecast the series. It proved to be very profitable for CBS and they went to air a total of ten seasons of the show. JAG series became popular not only in United States but it had viewers from over 100 countries. The popularity of the show is attributed mainly to the storyline. The storyline has been dynamic and has proactively incorporated all real time happenings in the world. People have been able to identify themselves with the happenings shown on the series. The ratings of the show have been significantly pushed up after the Bosnian War and 9/11 attacks. In fact after the 9/11 attacks, the show sailed smoothly to the top 10 of Nielsen's ratings and remained there till it ended.

Those of you who have not been able to catch the JAG series on the television, there is reason to celebrate. The JAG series is available in DVD today. It was first released as a VHS in the year 1998. The DVDs took over with the advances in technology and today almost all seasons are available on the DVD. The DVD collection is convenient to watch since you can pace the episodes at your convenience. Some of the episodes have been a big hit and you can watch these over and over again on a DVD.

CBS Home Enterainment produces the JAG series DVDs. It is available for sale at most online stores. These DVDs also have special features like commentaries by the crew, some aspects about the making of the series and behind-the-scene footages. Considering all the aspects, it is worthwhile to own the JG series DVD collection.
